I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst”
John 6:35
Why do you have relationship with Jesus? Looking at the 6th chapter in the Gospel of John, we come across a familiar story of the loaves and the fishes. What I am drawn to is the character and desire of the people.
Initially, we see that the large crowd had followed Him to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee “because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick” John 6:2). We then transition to the feeding of the 5,000. After they saw this miracle, there were rumblings amongst them that, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world” (John 6:14). Jesus knew that this language meant that they intended to make Him king by force.
Jesus separated Himself from the people and ended up on the other side of the shore from the majority (story of Jesus walking on water). When the people realized Jesus was gone from their shoreline, they got in their boats and went looking for Him. When they found Him, Jesus said to them, “You are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill” John 6:26).
Like the crowd of people, do we seek Jesus for what He can do for us? Do we seek after Him for the signs, wonders, and miracles He performs? Do we seek after Him for His ability to rule and to reign over our oppressors and captors? Do we seek after Him for tangible benefits such as food, clothing, and shelter? These are all real blessings that come from relationship with Jesus, but what is the main benefit of fellowship with the Son of God?
The main benefit of fellowship with the Son of God is just that - to know Him, and the power of His resurrection. There is nothing greater than to be with Jesus; to see Him for who He is - the Savior of the world! We have the privilege to feast on His Word and to drink from the fountain of Living Water.
The person of Jesus Christ is the prize. When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” John 6:35), there is power that is released into the atmosphere. The Word of God brings power through revelation!
Imagine being one of the people in the crowd. You had memory of the story of your ancestors being giving manna from heaven during the time of Moses, but now, standing before you is a Man stating that He is the bread of life that came down from heaven - which anyone may eat and not die. Jesus then states, “For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life” John 6:40).
He is trustworthy! When we behold Jesus for who He is, when we believe that He is who He says He is, we are granted access to eternal life. Life with Him, forever. We have access in the present age by coming to Jesus and believing in Him. This puts us in a state of ‘enough’. In truth, Jesus is more than enough! Behold the Lamb of God! Eat and drink of His goodness and mercy. You shall be filled.
